The NFIP has been a political football in Washington for years, particularly because of the unsustainable debt load it took on in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Automakers indicate that they have had to walk a fine line between not contributing to distracted driving and equipping new cars with the type of technologies that car buyers are increasingly demanding—namely interactive systems that are smartphone and mobile device compatible.
However, in automakers haste to make these technologies available, they often prove to be less than reliable for motorists using them. Roger Lanctot, a senior analyst at technology research firm Strategy Analytics, elaborated on automakers plight.
